Solar Hot Water

Live Hot Water data

Crossroads House In Portsmouth NH has a large solar hot water system installed on their brand new building. On the roof are 16 flat plate collectors and they are connected to a 900 gallon storage tank. The data below shows temperatures at the cold input to the collectors, the hot output from the collectors, the tank temperature, the hot water temperature leaving the tank and the solar output. Even this winter we are seeing tank temperatures that will substantially lower their hot water fuel bills.

Most households will see a complete payback of the initial cost within 5 or 6 years. After that, you could be making all the hot water you need for free for 7-8 months of the year, and 40-60% during the winter months. Add value and longevity to your home. A typical solar hot water system could provide hot water up to and beyond 40 years. You may need to replace your existing heating system 3 times by then.

Hot Water From The Sun, Not From Fossil Fuels
A typical tank-based electric or gas water heating system is substantially under-insulated so while you’re reading this, you’re paying to maintain hot water as the tank loses heat. Many oil-fired hot water systems are driven by a home heating oil burner. These systems are generally sized at least 50% larger than the coldest winter night needs. During the summer, making hot water becomes very inefficient.

Grand install

The Bar Harbor Grand Hotel has a large hot water system designed to cover 40-50% of their seasonal hot water needs. With thirty flat plate collectors and a 2000 gallon storage tank this system produces a massive amount of hot water. Hot water can be a very expensive component of a hotel's bottom line. Customers expect clean sheets and hot water above all else. So putting 2000 gallons of hot water in front of the hot water maker guarantees the Grand saves money and has happy customers. In addition, there is a clear marketing advantage to letting customers know their hot water was made using less fossil fuel.

SEA install, Kittery

This install in Kittery Maine is both solar hot water and electric.

The Hot Water system above is made by Velux. Velux is unique because the collectors are mounted directly on to the roof deck just like a skylight.  There is no exposed racking or plumbing. This system is two flat plates and a 120 gallon tank with electric backup. The Solar electric is a 2100 watts grid tied system.

Velux: A new player in Solar Hot Water.

To date there have been two primary collector types on the market; evacuated tubes and conventional flat plates. Conventional flat plates, for the most part, all mount and perform the same. A rack of some sort connects to the roof, the panels mount to the rack sticking up off the roof and the plumbing is exposed.
Velux, a well known manufacturer of skylights, has been making solar hot water collectors in Europe for many years. They are just beginning to bring these systems to the US and Seacoast Energy Alternatives has been chosen as one of the first dealers to offer these systems.
