Velux A new player in Solar Hot Water. PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 16 November 2008

To date there have been two primary collector types on the market, evacuated tubes and conventional flat plates. Conventional flat plates for the most part all mount and perform the same. A rack of some sort connects to the roof, the panels mount to the rack sticking up off the roof and the plumbing is exposed.
Velux, a well known manufacturer of skylights.....
has been making solar hot water collectors in Europe for many years now. They are just beginning to bring these systems to the US and Seacoast Energy Alternatives has been chosen as one of the first dealers in the area to offer these systems.
Many customers have expressed a desire for collectors that are unobtrusive and perhaps even attractive. Velux, using their years of experience building skylights, has addressed these desires as one might expect. The new collectors actually look like skylights. ImageThey are mounted into the roof and flashed like skylights. All the plumbing is under the collectors where it can not be seen.Image As you can see from these images, Velux collectors have an appearance that is hard to beat. And their performance is first rate as well.
Another advantage to the Velux approach is it eliminates the question of whether you should mount collectors on a roof that will need to be replaced in a few years. Because the shingles are cut back and flashed around the collectors a new roof can easily be installed with the collectors in place.
At the moment the collectors that are sized to match skylights are not being imported here but we expect that to change soon.
Our installer crew at SEA have been thoroughly trained and approved by Velux to sell and install these systems. Please give us a call if the Velux system interests you.
